Weather to play: The elemental affects of a changing climate

Tonya Rooney’s upcoming project will explore the ways children are affected by elemental forces such as heat, rain, wind and ice. It will explore the way elemental affects bring meaning to the vitality and interconnectedness of children’s common worlds. Taking inspiration from Ingold’s (2010) notion of the ‘weather world’, the project draws on the ‘intimate relation between becoming knowledgeable, walking along and the experience of weather’. In a context where the challenges of anthropogenic climate change are increasingly apparent, this project seeks to uncover the significance of attending to and being affected by diverse, cyclical and constantly shifting climatic conditions.
