Do bare feet matter?

Shared by PHILIPP KLAUS

Do bare feet matter? The school, located in a tropical climate, has a no shoes policy. Everyone is always barefoot. Bare feet bear meaning. They invoke sacred ground, a homely space, privacy, freedom, proximity, vulnerability and the joy of wriggling ones toes. What would a shift of perspective from the thought (curriculum, pedagogy, knowledge) to the felt look like if seen through, and with, bare feet? What ways of thinking about this space does barefootedness open up and allow? What affective encounters can be glimpsed when watching feet? All these thoughts emerged when the unthinkable happened. A child refused to go barefoot. Until then bare feet just were. Suddenly they demanded attention and I started watching. In this context becoming-barefooted turns out to be much more than walking around without socks.
